Session 1

Advanced Art Portfolio: Non-Traditional Portraits

Advanced Art Portfolio is a space for older, self-driven students to pursue the projects they are passionate about. At the start of the session students chose one project in either the visual or performing arts that they want to dive into. Art Portfolio was a place for students to build a sustainable artistic practice that they could continue to hone after the session is done.

Tin Can Film Festival: Mystery Movie

In Film Festival, students will write, film, and edit their own short films about a “family mystery.” This mystery could be a story inspired by their ancestry and history, or a thrilling tale they completely make up! Class time will be spent brainstorming stories, creating plot and character arcs, building shot lists, and learning how to edit effectively and creatively.

Zooms and Zines

Students will create hand-made zines on topics of their choosing. In class we will focus on creative writing and poetry. Students will workshop their writing and artwork with the group, and deepen their writing abilities through prompts and activities. Zines can include drawings, collage, photography, or anything else that students want to add!

Foundations of Pre-Algebra

In Foundations of Pre-Algebra, students will work through the essentials of pre-algebra at our own pace. We will grow comfortable adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing negative numbers. We will use the order of operations to solve algebraic expressions, and learned how to solve equations for a single variable.

Creative Coding

In Creative Coding, students will assume the mindset of a programmer. Using block based programs such as Scratch and Blocky, students will learn foundational structures such as if/else statements as well as core concepts like efficiency. Each student will end the session with independently designed and programmed games ready to play with friends and family.

Homegrown Naturalists

In Homegrown Naturalist, students will discover a mythical animal that has taken up residence in their home. Each student will hand-craft their animal from fabric or clay. Then students will create comprehensive field guides rooted in animal biology and environmental studies to explored the lives and habits of their creatures.

Session 2

Advanced Art Portfolio: Art as Activism

Advanced Art Portfolio is a space for older, self-driven students to pursue the projects they are passionate about. At the start of the session students chose one project in either the visual or performing arts that they want to dive into. Art Portfolio was a place for students to build a sustainable artistic practice that they could continue to hone after the session is done.

Tin Can Film Festival: Mockumentary

In Tin Can Film Fest, students will collaboratively create a Mockumentary. Class time will be spent brainstorming stories, creating plot and character arcs, building shot lists, and learning how to edit effectively and creatively.

Slivers and Snippets

In Slivers and Snippets, students will become comfortable adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions. We will also learn how to convert fractions into decimals and back again, and how to change an improper fraction into a mixed numeral.

Cook book!

Cook book learners will spend three weeks gathering recipes from friends and family, taste-testing recipes in the kitchen, learning the science of cooking, and assembling their recipes into a handmade, illustrated cookbook or recipe box.

Mad Scientist

Each week students will dive into one scientific discipline (chemistry, physics, or biology) by completing a series of fun, hands-on science experiments. We will extracted strawberry DNA, use chemistry to make yummy treats, take pinhole camera pictures, and much more!

Session 3

Advanced Art Portfolio: Art for Others

Advanced Art Portfolio is a space for older, self-driven students to pursue the projects they are passionate about. At the start of the session students chose one project in either the visual or performing arts that they want to dive into. Art Portfolio was a place for students to build a sustainable artistic practice that they could continue to hone after the session is done.

Tin Can Film Festival: Space Odyssey

In Tin Can: A Space Odyssey, students will write, filmed, and edit their own collaborative sci-fi movie (where each student stars as a member of a space ship’s crew). This session we will focus on filming techniques and shot composition.

Animation Coding

In Animation Coding, students will assume the mindset of a programmer. Using block based programs such as Scratch and Blocky, students will learn foundational structures such as if/else statements as well as core concepts like efficiency to make their own animations.

Music VideOh!

In “Music Vide...Oh?” students will choreograph a music video on zoom to a song of their choice! They will make their own costumes, light their own bedroom “stages,” and explore creative ways to use zoom boxes and cameras to make unexpected and exciting choreography.

Writer’s Circle

In Tin Can Writers Circle, students will write original short stories while exploring their unique writing voices. Through prompts and activities, we will work to deepen our storytelling and creative writing skills. We will dabble with descriptions and settings, different points of view, and learn how to storytell with a twist.
